Are antibacterial cleaners more effective if left for longer than the stated time?
Technically, yes, if you have a longer contact time you will have a higher kill rate, but in reality it is not going to make a massive difference. E.g. you are using a product that states a 5 minutes contact time to meet EN1276 standards and your surface has 1 million bacteria on it, after the 5 minute contact time there will only be 10 bacteria left.
Do you need to rinse or wipe antibac cleaners from surfaces?
If you are using a QAC/quat based sanitiser on FOOD CONTACT equipment (e.g. chopping boards) then the surfaces should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water. This is due to concerns of residues being transferred into the food chain. Minimum Residue levels (MRL’s) have been set for QAC’s and the only way to be sure to meet these is by rinsing. This does not apply to front of house e.g. restaurant tables, highchairs etc. Rinsing of FOOD CONTACT surfaces is not required if using lactic acid based sanitisers as there are no MRL’s set against lactic acid. On NON-FOOD CONTACT surfaces rinsing is not required but we would advise wiping the surface down after the contact time to prevent a build-up of chemical on the surface.
