What is BS 8599-1?
The British Standard for Workplace First Aid Kits is known as BS 8599-1. The BHTA (British Healthcare Trades Association) undertook a review of this standard and propsed changes to the British Standards Institute (BSi), who launched an update on January 10th 2019. The previous standard is being phased out during 2019.
What's changing?
Workplace First Aid Kits were reviewed and ameneded to ensure they are up to date with the latest technology, workplace practices and potential risks employees may face in the working environment. Employers are required to carry out a risk assessment to decide what the hazard levels are and how many employees are involved in the area to be covered. The standard contains two key tables: one covering what should be contained in a workplace first aid kit and one providing information on the appropriate size of the kit for the workplace environment.
